The Pros and Cons of Ortho-K

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, is a non-surgical vision correction that helps patients see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses. Ortho-k contact lenses gently reshape the cornea while the patient sleeps. In the morning, you can take them out; there is no need for prescription glasses or daytime contact lenses. Ortho-k is an effective, convenient option for individuals with mild to moderate nearsightedness or astigmatism.

How ortho-k works

Ortho-k uses specially designed rigid contact lenses that the individual wears overnight to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye. By morning, the cornea has changed enough that distance vision may be clearer without glasses or daytime contacts. The effect is not permanent, so the patient must wear the lenses every night to achieve effective daytime vision correction.

This temporary effect is one of the most important things to understand early. Some patients hear about ortho-k online or from friends and assume it works like laser eye surgery. However, it does not. That said, it can be highly effective for the right patient; it depends on consistency and follow-up care.

What are the cons of ortho-k?

Ortho-k has some drawbacks to consider. The biggest downside for many patients is the level of responsibility involved. These rigid contacts are worn overnight, so cleaning, storage, insertion, and follow-up visits all matter. Moreover, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) notes that sleeping in any type of contact lenses raises the risk of infection. Patients can minimize this risk by taking the routine seriously and informing their optometrist early if redness, pain, or blurry vision develops.

There are practical limitations, as well. According to the AAO, ortho-k works best for lower amounts of myopia and less astigmatism. Results also vary by eye shape and exact prescription. Some patients achieve better or more predictable vision with glasses, soft contact lenses, or other myopia-management options.
