What Is the Process of Getting Prescription Glasses?

Prescription Glasses New Rochelle, NY

Getting the right prescription glasses helps maintain the integrity of your eyes. Unfortunately, many do not see it this way and will settle for straining or choosing glasses that do more harm than good. This guide will help you through the simple process of choosing prescription glasses to improve not only your sight but the health of your eyes as well.

How to Get Prescription Glasses

Eye Exam

The first step to receiving prescription glasses is scheduling an eye exam. An eye exam is a series of tests performed by an optometrist, who will examine the eyes and determine what prescription one needs for each eye. This includes checking for abnormalities in the structure or function of each eye and checking to ensure that they are working together properly.

During the eye exam, we will ask the patient to read letters from across the room and perform other tasks that will include the use of vision testing technology, such as a phoropter and tonometer, to test how well they see at various distances, how they react to light, and how their eyes are being affected by underlying health conditions, such as diabetes.

Choose Frames

After the exam, the optometrist will review their findings with the patient. If there is evidence of an eye condition, such as astigmatism, the optometrist will advise on best practices to follow in addition to wearing their new glasses.

The next step will be choosing the frames. There are a couple of important factors to consider when selecting frames. First, one should consider their lifestyle and the shape of their face. Frames can consist of different materials, such as titanium, plastic, gold, or silver. Therefore, one should consider what they do daily (work, sports, etc.). If comfort is the main concern for the patient, they should consider titanium or plastic over heavier materials so they do not place too much pressure on the nose bridge or constantly slide down their face. Durability is also key in considering what will work for one’s prescription glasses–not only do they need to be comfortable for daily wear, but also they need to last through potential accidents.

Face shapes can be split into five types: round, oval, square, heart, and triangular. Determining their face shape can help determine which frame style better fits their face. Of course, patients will have the opportunity to try on different style frames in our office. Our team can help guide patients when selecting frames if necessary, but ultimately it is up to them.

Waiting Period

It is important to note that patients will receive their prescription glasses on a different day than choosing their frames. The chosen frames and prescriptions are sent to an offsite lab to be crafted. After the prescription glasses are created, they will be sent back to our office, and we will contact the patient to come to pick them up in the office. An appointment will not need to be scheduled for the pickup. This process usually takes two weeks. When patients return to retrieve their glasses, they may try them on to ensure the fit and prescription are correct. We may adjust the frames if needed.
